About the Film
Over one billion people in the world live on less than two dollars a day. Hand shelling peanuts nets a villager in Mali, West Africa about ten pounds of nuts per day. The universal nut-sheller, a simple but appropriate technology, allows that same village to shell three-quarters of a ton in the same time. The Appropriate Genius tells the story of Jock Brandis, inventor of the universal nut-sheller and his efforts fighting hunger and poverty. This documentary chronicles Jock Brandis’ attempts and collaborations since the first prototype. it tells the story of a self-effacing and charismatic man whose mission is to introduce appropriate technology and make such villages productive without depending on modern unsustainable infrastructures. It brings his idea of what some consider “stone-age technology” to life.
